RESTORE Scar Therapy

RESTORE scar therapy is a method of non-invasive physical therapy developed to treat scar tissue, fibrosis and adhesions after surgery or injury using specialist scar massage and fascial release, therapy tools and self-care advice to promote healthy recovery.

RESTORE therapy has been developed to:

  • Release tightness and improve appearance - RESTORE scar therapy is a treatment that uses massage, home care, and other techniques to help loosen and release tight scar tissue. This can improve the appearance and feel of scars, making them softer, smoother, and less noticeable. Treatment can be beneficial for both new and old scars.

  • Reduce Sensitivity, Pain and Itching - Irritated scar tissue and trapped nerves can cause long-term discomfort. RESTORE scar massage and mobilisations can reduce pain. Stimulation can normalise sensitivity, and scar creams, oils, silicone or gels can soothe itchy scars.

  • Help Restricted Mobility - RESTORE scar therapy can be used to reduce tightness and adhesions in scar tissue. By encouraging mobility between the layers of skin, fascia and muscle, the range and ease of movement can improve.

  • Stimulate and Boost Healing - Scar massage is often recommended by surgeons as it can help to promote optimum scar healing after surgery and may help to reduce the risk of longer-term complications.

  • Support Emotional Wellbeing - Therapeutic and holistic, RESTORE scar massage is a powerful way to aid emotional recovery and help people accept their scars. Teaching how to care for scars at home with simple self-scar massage is highly beneficial.

How can scar therapy help you?

If you've recently had surgery or an injury, you might benefit from seeing a RESTORE scar therapy trained therapist. We can treat your scar to help it heal and soften as it matures, and we can also suggest self-care for you to continue at home.

Scar therapy can be beneficial for older scars, even though they may have been there for a long time. The body is constantly renewing cells, so your old scar can still improve when given the right stimulation.

Treatment using the RESTORE method should never cause you pain. We do not need to hurt you in order to improve your scar and any underlying adhesions or fibrosis.

While RESTORE scar therapy cannot make a scar disappear, it can often improve the appearance and feel of the scar. This may include reducing pain, sensitivity, and tightness, and making the scar smoother and more supple. The number of treatments needed will vary depending on the severity of the scar and the individual's response to treatment.

Scarred Leg

After Your Scar Therapy Treatment

Scar therapy is a treatment that uses various techniques to stimulate the body and promote changes in the scar tissue. During your appointment, the therapist may work on the muscles and fascia around the scar, which can help to improve the appearance and feel of the scar. You may also feel relaxed and experience a sensation of lightness and mobility after your appointment.

What to expect after a RESTORE scar therapy treatment?

You may notice changes in your scar immediately after treatment, or you may notice changes in the days or weeks following treatment. Some people may need to undergo several treatments before significant changes are observed.

As nerves heal, some people may experience a sharp pain that comes and goes for a few moments. This can happen in the days or weeks after treatment. It is normal and nothing to worry about.

Scar therapy can be a physically and emotionally demanding process. It is important to listen to your body and rest as needed. Gentle and compassionate touch on your scar may trigger an emotional release. If you are struggling with your mental health, please reach out for help.

I may recommend that you perform self-scar massage and use scar care products to help hydrate and protect your scar. These treatments can be very helpful in improving the cosmetic and functional appearance of your scar as part of a scar therapy treatment program.

Exercising

Exercising after RESTORE Scar Therapy

With proper care, you can safely return to exercise after RESTORE scar therapy.  We recommend avoiding strenuous activity for 24-48 hours after treatment.

During an appointment I will stimulate the scar and surrounding area. If you engage in demanding physical activities, your body will need to divert the attention away from the scar. However being totally inactive after treatment can lead to stiffness. So gentle exercise, stretching and following any personal exercises given will usually be helpful.

Just remember to listen to your body and start slowly. With time and patience, you will be able to get back to your regular exercise routine.

When to seek Medical advice.

In the unusual circumstance that there is increasing swelling or pain, which persists for more than 48 hours after the treatment, or is increasing in the days following treatment, contact a medical practitioner to rule out an infection or other medical concerns.
